Natyam is dance. On its own the word means "dramatic art". Natyam is the very essence and bones of Bharatanatyam. In its essence, Natyam means dance or foot work. Combined with bhava or expression, and tala or rhythm, we can see the true meaning of Bharatanatyam, dance through movement, expression, and rhythm. There is so much more to Bharatanatyam than just footwork or technique, the dancer has to be in a focused being, with a concentrated and centered mind. Only then will the dancer be able to embrace the art form and begin to dance.
